Five Tips for Starting a Mobile Auto Detailing Business

The birth of your new mobile auto detailing business is an exciting time. You see opportunity everywhere - at the mall, in business parks, at in the neighborhoods you drive by. However, before rushing into operations there are a few helpful tips you should know.

Check Water Discharge Laws of Your Local Municipality
If you're on the west coast this is a big one. With drought and water restrictions running rampant across much of the United States, cities and towns have started to crack down on detailers. It's imperative you go to your local town hall and ask what permits you need to get started. Openly dumping your waste water down the sewer drains or into the streets is no longer acceptable. This is one of the main reasons why so many detailers have switched from traditional car wash products to waterless car wash products

Get Garage Keeper's Insurance
Another critical factor for running a successful mobile detailing business is having the right insurance. You want to have the peace of mind that in case of an accident you are covered. In fact, many customers today are savvy enough to know that detailer's are required to carry insurance. Do you really want to be liable for damaging that Ferrari? Probably not. Ask your local insurance agent for options.

Define Your Target Market
Yes, it's true that most American's own and drive a car. However, their expectations of what they consider "clean" and "detailed" vary greatly. Just because you have the greatest equipment and expertise doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is looking for at $200 detail. In fact, many of today's customer's are happy with a $25 or $50 express wash. Does the average person really care about swirl marks? You'd be surprised at how many people don't even notice them. So define who you are targeting first and cater your services accordingly.

Be Prepared to Say No
So you've launched your business and are getting calls - great! Now it's time to actually check out some vehicles and see what condition they're in. As a mobile auto detailer you are going to get a peek inside people's lives from what's inside their car. You'd be surprised what you'll find. However, some cars are just too dirty. That's right. Think

about it for a second. The person who lets their car deteriorate really has no interest in it's upkeep. So if they come to you looking to get it cleaned out, do you really think they're prepared to spend a lot of money? For example, if you have an interior detailing package for $75 and you get a car that is filled with stains and pet hair, you're going to spend a lot more time dealing with this car than an average consumer. Be sure you let the customer know that it will cost them more money and explain why. There is nothing worse than failing to set an expectation and having an angry customer.

Select the Right Products
Yes, it's true that you can run down to your local superstore and grab the cheapest bottle of car wash from the shelf. But, you'll soon find that cheap product = cheap results. There is a reason why the pros invest a bit more money on high-quality detailing supplies. They simply give better results.
